  • Ly Nha Ky: “Catus Flower” in Vietnam’s Movie World
    Friday, 03/06/2011

Ly Nha Ky appears in Vietnam’s movie world unexpectedly as a traveling. However, her first role actually attracts the audience’s attention as a strange signal. Just coming back Vietnam from October 2005, Ly Nha Ky has played in five films. Those films include “Tinh yeu con mai” (Director Phuong Dien), “Ghen” (Director Dang Luu Viet Bao), “Chuyen tinh yeu” (Director Xuan Phuoc), “Gia mua mot thuong de” (Director Ho Ngoc Xum), and “Tham tu tu” (Director Tran My Ha).

From an early age, Ly Nha Ky has settled in German with her parents, graduated Real University, major in Economics. For love of art, she used to study dance and perform some small programs of her dance school. However, her parents want her to make a career in business. She has just graduated and come back Vietnam with hopes of looking for business chances in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and then Ly Nha Ky has stepped into movie world by chance when she took a walk in Sai Gon.

The first film that she joined is “Tinh yeu con mai”, at that time, “I cannot speak Vietnamese fluently”, Nha Ky said. Therefore, for the first week, Nha Ky’s main work that is not to act in films, is to study specialized terms of film industry in order to understand what the film director say.

Her first role brought a strange feel to the audiences by her expression style. That is her simple and natural acting as daily life. With good looks and self-confident acting, Ly Nha Ky expresses somewhat the soul of character and really gets right inside a character.

Ly Nha Ky looks very youthful, at first time seeing Nha Ky, many people thought this Vietnamese Germanic actress surely lacks real-life experience. However, I think if they have a chance to talk informally with Nha Ky, they will change their first thoughts.

Ly Nha Ky acts very well based on the character and fate of characters. We have an ebullient argument about love and marriage compared between East culture and West culture. Nha Ky said that she has just ended her love in Vietnam. It makes her have more experiences of love and marriage; understand the differences of culture between German and Vietnam. She also said she really sympathizes with Ngoc Hoan character that she acted in the film named “Ghen” (Jealous). The fate of Ngoc Hoan is also tragedy of successful women in the Occident before and the Orient today. Women who is successful in society is lacking in family love and easy to be depraved…

Ly Nha Ky tells about the days she acted the film “Gia mua mot thuong de” filmed in Ben Tre. There, she lived wholeheartedly with the character. The memories such as falling into rivers, swimming in mud, and minor accidents identifying her with her colleagues, those are the reasons why a “non-specialized” actress who is not trained as a professional actress can be in tune with and get right inside a character easily like that.

Knowledge of complicated aspects of life and rich inner feelings has helped Ly Nha Ky capable to penetrate and live true with her role. Beyond all movie magic is sympathy and understanding with the fate of characters. In order to act the role of Thach Thao in film named “Gia mua mot thuong de”, Ly Nha Ky lived and worked together with true characters in life. That is the family of Ben Tre coconut candy firm’s mistress. During that time, Nha Ky discovers inner feelings and specific characteristics of characters. Thanks to that, Nha Ky got right inside a character truthfully.

Ly Nha Ky still has many plans for her future. She has still not given up her intention becoming a businesswoman and mistress of theme park in Vietnam yet. That is reason why she was in Vietnam last year. However, the fate leads her into film industry and makes her first plan discontinued. In the short term, Nha Ky will reserve much time for film industry. She knows that she is only a “laywoman”, so she thinks she must make every effort to study more in order to go far on this thorns path.

Ly Nha Ky assumes herself that she is “catus flower” growing on sand when she has stepped into film industry. According to her, catus flower is the symbol of the aspiration for struggle on severe weather conditions. Achievements reaped from hardships are really worthy of pride.

“Catus flower” in movie world is confident of her choice and tries to bring life early flowers, which is crystallization of art labour with high struggle.
